Top 6 Best New Shows of 2005

By Rachel Thomas, About.com

Last year it was "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives." Every season, only a handful of new television shows really stand out above the rest. In 2005, we were treated to some of the best new programming we've seen in years.

1. "Grey's Anatomy"

"Desperate Housewives" may have stolen the Sunday night limelight for the first half of the 2004-05 TV season, but the premiere of "Grey's Anatomy" surprised even the most critical critics in the business. The pairing of "Anatomy" and "Housewives" has networks running for their lives and has finally put this dull night on the map as the new must-see TV night.

2. "Medium"

Just when supernatural-type programming was starting to die away, along came "Medium." Based on the stories of real life psychic Alison DuBois, Patricia Arquette's portrayal of this complicated character continues to sweep audiences off their feet week after week.

3. "Prison Break"

I never thought a show other than "24" would have me sitting on the edge of my seat every week. "Prison Break" offers fans an exciting alternative to the many crime dramas that have infiltrated the schedule this season. Will they ever break out from prison? Stay tuned and find out.

4. "Supernatural"

Since I was a kid, I have been fascinated with urban legends. I could never get enough of those classic ghost stories. "Supernatural" offers viewers the chance to relive those childhood urban legends we all remember so well. Whatever you do, don't turn on that light!

5. "Commander in Chief"

What if a woman became the leader of the free world? Would we accept her? Would we agree with her decisions? Would her staff stand behind her choices? "Commander in Chief" gives us a glimpse of what it might be like in the White House if a woman ever achieved this kind of power. Paging Hilary Clinton....

6. "Surface"

What if there was a new life form discovered in the depths of the ocean? What if we dropped down a notch on the food chain? How would we handle it? "Surface" has quickly become one of my favorite guilty pleasures of the week. "Supernatural" may be scary, but "Surface" is terrifying, not because of the creatures, but the idea of a discovery much like the creatures on the show is likely sometime in the future.
